Samuel Roy popularly known as Sammy Hagar or The Red Rocker, is a rock vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and musician. Sammy was born in Salinas, California.
Born on October 13, 1947, Hagar came into the public eye in the 1970s with the hard rock band Montrose. Later, he crafted a successful solo career for himself scoring an enduring hit in 1984 with “I Can’t Drive 55”. He saw a meteoric rise to fame when he replaced David Lee Roth as the lead singer of Van Halen in 1985, but left the band in 1996 only to return for a 2 year reunion from 2003 to 2005.
Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen on March 12, 2007. Hagar also remained a member of a string of other pre-Montrose bands including Big Bang, Skinny, Dustcloud, Cotton, Jimmy, and Manhole. He then went on to become a member of the Justice Brothers along with guitarist Bob Anglin, keyboardist Al Shane, bassist Jeff Nicholson, and drummer David Lauser.
In 2008, Hagar created Chickenfoot, a group with Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani. Their debut album with the same name was released in June 2009. The second one soon followed by the name Chickenfoot III in 2011.
Sammy currently lives in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and has another residence in Mill Valley, California. His current role is that of a lead singer in Chickenfoot. Besides music, he also founded and owns the Cabo Wabo Tequila brand and restaurant chain, as well as Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum.
