Beck, the American multi-instrumentalist and musician, was born on July 8, 1970 as Bek David Campbell in Los Angeles, California. The four-time platinum musician gained underground popularity via his early recordings, which merged lyrical and music experimentation with social criticism. His breakthrough success came with the release of his 1994 hit single “Loser.” Beck has released eleven studio albums, one remix album, one compilation album, forty singles and three EPs. Music fans and critics have hailed Beck as one of the most idiosyncratic and creative musicians of alternative rock in the 1990s-2000s era.
In 1993, Beck released Golden Feelings, his debut album, via Sonic Enemy, an independent record label. That year the singles “MTV Makes me Want to Smoke Crack” and “Loser” helped to gain him widespread recognition. In 1994, Beck released Stereopathetic Soulmanure via the independent label Flipside Records. In 1994, he released Mellow Gold via DG Records, Beck’s major label debut. In 1994, he also released One Foot in the Grave via K Records, an indie label.
In 1996, Beck released Odelay, his breakthrough album. It spawned the hit singles “The New Pollution” and “Where It’s At.” Odelay went double platinum in Canada and the US and won two Grammy Awards. He followed up with 1998’s Mutations and 1999’s Midnite Vultures. The albums were both commercial and critical successes. Beck released Sea Change in 2002. It became his first Top 10 album in the US. In 2005, he released Guero. It peaked in the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart, to date his highest charting album. “E-Pro,” the first single, topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Beck’s two most recent albums, 2006’s The Information and 2008’s Modern Guilt, both hit the Top 10 on the US album charts.
